Summer Tour 2005
First stop, Rievaulx Abbey in North Yorkshire. Ordinarily, our tours don't allow for much stopping, and we'd made a conscious decision to stop and spend a few hours at worthwhile things, and to take more photos. We hadn't planned to go to Rievaulx, but the route we wanted to take across the moors went right past it, so we stopped.

We bought an English Heritage pack of playing cards in the shop, featuring English abbeys. There is a beautiful picture of Lindisfarne Priory on the ten of hearts.

Moving swiftly on, we were lucky enough to have a couple of hours on Holy Island, at Lindisfarne Priory on Holy Island. The island is accessed via a causeway which is at sea-level, give or take a couple of feet, so is inaccessible about half the time. We were lucky to get tide times in Hexham that morning, and by the simple process of hacking up the A1 (modulo all the bloody caravans) we made it in time.

This is the Priory's entrance wall, seen from the inside, with some ugly prat loitering about in the bottom left-hand corner.

They call this the rainbow arch. It's actually half of a pair, the other of which is now gone, which supported a tower above the crossing. That said, it's probably the Priory's most recognisable feature.
